John-William Waterhouse
Βρετανός ζωγράφος της ομάδας των Προραφαηλιτών ο οποίος επηρεάστηκε και από το κίνημα του Ιμπρεσιονισμού (1849-1917). Μυήθηκε από μικρός στην μαγεία της τέχνης καθώς και οι δύο γονείς του ήταν ζωγράφοι. Ακολουθώντας τα βήματά τους, ασχολήθηκε από τα νεαρά του χρόνια με την ζωγραφική και φοίτησε στην Βασιλική Ακαδημία, με την οποία στην συνέχεια συνεργάστηκε εκθέτοντας τα έργα τους στις ετήσιες εκθέσεις της. Το 1895 διορίστηκε καθηγητής τέχνης στην Σχολή Τέχνης του St. John's Wood και συμμετείχε στο Συμβούλιο της Βασιλικής Ακαδημίας. Ανήκει στην ομάδα των λίγων καλλιτεχνών, το έργο των οποίων αναγνωρίστηκε ενόσω βρίσκονταν ακόμα στην ζωή την οποία πέρασαν με άνεση χάρη στην τέχνη τους.
Tα πρώτα του έργα δεν θύμιζαν πολύ ως προς το στυλ την προ-ραφαηλιτική τέχνη, ήταν όμως εμπνευσμένα από την κλασσική αρχαιότητα στο ύφος του Lawrence Alma-Tadema και του Frederic Leighton. Αργότερα υιοθέτησε το στυλ των προ-ραφαηλιτών, και παρόλο που η Αδελφότητα είχε διαλυθεί, ο Waterhouse θεωρείται ο ύστερος εκπρόσωπός της.
Θέματά του είναι κυρίως οι μοιραίες γυναίκες των αρθούριων θρύλων και της ελληνικής μυθολογίας, καθώς και σκηνές από την γενικότερη αρχαία ελληνική μυθολογία. Τα χρώματά του είναι ζωηρά και μελαγχολικά ταυτοχρόνως, το δέρμα και οι χρωματικοί τόνοι του αποδίδονται με εξαιρετική ακρίβεια, η στάση του γυναικείου σώματος ταυτίζεται πλήρως με τα συναισθήματα που θέλει να εκφράσει. Οι γυναίκες του γοητευτικές, θελκτικές, μυστηριώδεις, τυλιγμένες με την ατμόσφαιρα του μύθου αντιπροσωπεύουν ίσως τις διάφορες πτυχές της θυληκότητoς και της γυναικείας φύσεως.
